Have you worked hard to reach your life and career goals, yet still feel unsatisfied? Despite many accomplishments, do you often feel not good enough? Would you like your relationships to feel closer and more fulfilling?
Have you tried various techniques to create change but continue to feel something is fundamentally missing?
Thanks to cutting edge breakthroughs in neuroscience, and deeper insights regarding the impact of trauma, we now have a better understanding than ever before into the realm of human emotional and psychological well-being.
However, many therapy models commonly used today, still focus predominantly on creating change through symptom reduction and behavior modification. While these approaches may provide at least temporary relief, there are still many people who feel that the complexity of what they are experiencing has not been fully addressed, and may even feel profoundly missed by these symptom focused approaches.
Rather than focusing solely on behaviors and symptoms, I work with people to create a collaborative therapeutic relationship, and together, we explore the deep, complex, and often unconscious patterns that may be driving the various symptoms. This depth oriented approach helps to support a therapeutic process designed to promote deeper change, healing and growth.
My own journey into the mental health field began over 30 years ago when, after a particularly tumultuous adolescence, I set out to try and discover more about the source of my own difficulties. Why did I struggle so much despite a seemingly pretty ordinary childhood? I had a sense that if I could learn more about my own challenges, I would be better equipped to support my clients with their own healing.
I started my career by working with adolescents who, much like myself as a teenager, were also struggling in all sorts of ways. Over the years, I worked with many diverse groups of people of all ages, backgrounds, and walks of life and in a variety of therapeutic roles. I spent many years furthering my education, earning my Bachelors degree in psychology, my Master’s degree in Social Work, and becoming a licensed psychotherapist.
I found that I truly loved working with my clients. I loved connecting, I loved learning about their hopes, triumphs, and challenges. I found the field of psychology endlessly fascinating, and yet, in terms of a therapeutic approach or philosophy that truly resonated with me, I still hadn’t found quite what I was looking for.
Finally, after many years of searching, I found my way to the field of complex trauma. I had finally found a therapeutic approach and community dedicated to exploring and attempting to better understand the root causes of human suffering, rather than just diagnosing, labeling, and treating the various symptoms of it.
For me, discovering the emerging field of complex and developmental trauma, has felt like the key which has started to unlock much of what I had so long been searching for. It has provided a cohesive and compassionate roadmap to understanding many of the root causes of human suffering, including the many ways humans respond to complex trauma, as well as a roadmap for a path back to health, healing and wholeness.
